The Baltimore Station

The renovation and expansion of a historic South Baltimore firehouse has transformed the Baltimore Station into a residential treatment facility for men in recovery from substance use disorders. The project preserves the building’s legacy while adapting it to meet contemporary needs.

Located in the Sharp-Leadenhall neighborhood, the program accommodates 92 residents through a mix of dormitories and semi-private suites, supported by bathrooms, a commercial kitchen, and shared dining areas that encourage community. Dedicated office space for counselors and administrators ensures a supportive environment for both residents and staff.

Sustainable strategies were integral to the design, including the use of autoclaved aerated concrete masonry and a green roof that reduces heat gain and manages stormwater. Historic character is celebrated through the restoration of an original spiral stair uncovered during demolition and the incorporation of salvaged doors from another historic property. These elements, chosen through a collaborative design/build charrette with staff and residents, reinforce the project’s emphasis on resilience and community.
