HOLLINS MARKET HEAD HOUSE

LOCATION: Hollins Market, Baltimore, Maryland
YEAR: Unbuilt
SIZE: 12,500 SF
CLIENT: Baltimore Public Markets Corporation
DEVELOPER: SAA/EVI

In the Fall of 2022, Twopoint Studio with the Development Team at SAA/EVI were awarded an RFP for re-making the historic Hollins Head House into a viable activity spot in the center of the Hollins Market neighborhood. This two-story structure sits at one end of the historic shed building, and functioned collectively at one time as one of the oldest public markets in the country. However, the Head House building went into disrepair and became vacant about 20 years ago.

Our proposal aimed to invigorate the second floor, one of the most challenging aspects of urban commercial development. We developed a partnership with Mobtown Ballroom for the purpose. Mobtown Ballroom has a huge following at their current location in Pigtown nearby, and has nighttime programming year-round, 7 days a week. They require tall ceilings for their aerial acrobatic classes - so the second floor of the Head House is one of the few places within Baltimore City that can meet this need.

Conceptually, the second floor transforms into a new home for Mobtown Ballroom, serving as both a class and performance venue. Additionally, they would lease the lower level for a new café and restaurant concept, facilitating all-day programming.
