THE DIVIDED LINE’s fun and celebratory experience of a virtual Utopian inner harbor epitomized the importance of collaboration and engagement with a limited budget and volunteer service. The design/build multi-disciplinary team created a multi-sensory installation engaging people of all ages, physical abilities, and backgrounds to participate. High school and architecture student volunteer teams assisted in the erection and nightly public virtual“viewings” with over 400,000 visitors participating in the festival over 10 days.
The framework is constructed of steel frames with polycarbonate panels containing LED light tape, constructed to form a cave-like space as the backdrop for a virtual experience. The result was sculptural and poetic, engaging and interesting, fun, and interactive – yet also delivered an added sense of inclusion in the moment – a hyperreality that extended the allegory of Light City to the people of Baltimore.
